Natural climatic spas of Štrbské Pleso are located 1,351 m above sea level in western part of High Tatras - the highest mountains in Slovakia. The Tatras rank to unique mountainous climatic place in Slovakia and in central Europe.
Treatment of chronic unspecified diseases of respiratory track and lungs in Tatras has history of more than one hundred years old. More than one hundred years ago, in 1876, MUDr. Mikuláš Szontágh sr. after experiencing the Alps opened his first sanatories in the town of Nový Smokovec.
History and use of the special climate in Štrbské Pleso vary. First information about Štrbské Pleso was found in 1644 in the geographical work of Dávid Fröhlich. There is a written information about Štrbské Pleso from 1719 noticed by Georgius Buchholtz sr., a reasearcher from the town of Veľká Lomnica. Development of Štrbské Pleso starts similarly to the development of the whole region of the Tatras after connecting the town of Poprad with the town of Košice through Košice-Bohumín railway track (in 1871). The spas were established here in 1877 when count Jozef Szentiványi the founder of Štrbské Pleso started to offer first accommodation with rehabilitation-balneological treatment. In 1885 Štrbské Pleso was declared the spa town. Here starts the history of the spas in Štrbské Pleso.
Tens of years have passed and Štrbské Pleso served more to tourism than rehabilitation. Rehabilitation treatment was offered only during summer season with medical supervision. After WWI the premises served for war reconvalescents. In the brochure Informátor Tatier in 1926 hotel services were offered in Grandhotel Hviezdoslav, Kriváň Hotel and villas Jánošík, Detva (current Solisko spa house) and Maryna.
Importance of Štrbské Pleso has increased after WWII.
Sanatories served the war veterans, later for treatment of tuberculosis and from the 50-ties thanks to MUDr. Ján Pullman, well-known asthmathologist and husband of the poet Maša Haľamová, also for treatment of unspecific diseases of respiratory trackt. From WWII the spa house complex Hviezdoslav for treatment of adults (former Kriváň, Hviezdoslav and Jánošík hotels). Solisko spa house was created from the villa of Jan Jiskra z Brandýsa and served for treatment of young persons, later as a spa house for children. In 1876 Helios sanatorium was opened. In 1995-1997 the spa house Solisko was reconstructed and shortly after reconstruction it was awarded four top international awards. It was opened on 4 July 1994. Solisko spa house provides 52 beds of the best accommodation category. Together with catering complex and its own health care operation, balneotherapy and physiotherapy it forms a whole rehabilitation complex.
Solisko spa house offers facilities and services for the most demanding clients.
