The village of Koceľovce is situated in the valley known as Štítnicka dolina.

The village was established after the attack by the Tatars in 1241.
In 1243, the Hungarian King Belo IV. invited several German miners to settle down in this area. The name of this village was derived from one of the German miners, a man called Gätzla.

During 16th century this village lost its original German features and became more of a traditional Slovak village.
Over the past centuries the inhabitants of Koceľovce were occupied in the areas of farming, fruit production and mining.

The local gothic Evangelical Church is the place for regular worships and peaceful prayers. Unique wall paintings in the church date from late 14th century.
