The village of Markuka is one of several villages situated in the District of Roňava. The village is located in the valley commonly known as títnická dolina and on the right bank of the stream known as Hankovský potok. Together with all nearby fields, meadows and woods, the village spreads across 681 hectares of unspoiled natural area. This small Slovak village, which is considered to be one of the nicest in the district, is located 370 metres above sea level.
The local Evangelical church was built during the Hussite times in 14th century. The main interior feature of this church is a wooden altar which is 3 metres high and beautifully carved and decorated. The church is a religious center for regular worships, prayer groups and Sunday school.

Various raw ores have been found in and around this village over the past centuries. They say that even golden ores were mined in the area in the past. Nowadays the local miners concentrate on the unique white marble and gray slate, which can be used in the building and construction industries.

The village has got only 170 inhabitants. Majority of them are occupied with farming and agricultural activities. There are several private animal farms in the area, cattle and sheep are the most common animals to have. Some villagers are producing local honey; others do craft work such as wood - carving and cabinet making. The older generation is trying to keep the old traditions and craft work alive and pass it on the younger generation by practical presentations and workshops.
The local woods are particularly popular during weekends when people have more time to do walking and exploring the local nature. Forest fruits, herbs and mushroom picking are also popular and so is fishing in the local fresh water stream.

The primary aim of the village is to build some facilities for potential tourists and open a few private guest houses which would offer accommodation all year round. There are also numerous plans to convert old family houses and rural cottages into small B&B facilities which would cater for families and people of all ages. We are hoping to attract many visitors once the main road from Brdárka to Dobiná is open in the very near future.
