The village of Otročok is situated in the southeastern part of the mountain complex known as Slovenské rudohorie. Located in the valley of Turiec, this village was joined to Hungary in 1938 for the following 7 years however since 1945 it has belonged to Slovakia. The village of Otročok has got a typical farming and agricultural character. Its inhabitants have always been occupied with farming and grape growing. There are several fruit orchards and even tobacco was produced here once upon a time.
The earliest written reference of Otročok dates from 1274 when the village was known as "Atrachyk". The name of the village has changed over the past centuries. It was known as "Otrochyk" in 1277, "Otrochok" in 1291, "Otrokocs" in 1773, "Otrokoč" in 1920 and finally it became known as "Otročok" from 1927. An early statistics show that in 1828 there were 583 inhabitants living in 77 houses. Over the further decades the population of the village has decreased and nowadays there are just over 300 people living in the village. Only 30 per cent of them are of Slovak nationality, the rest of villagers are of Hungarian nationality. Currently, just less that one third of villagers are unemployed and looking for a new job.

The local church was built in the classicist style in the early 19th century (from 1815 until 1827). Several changes were made to the interior and exterior of the church during 19th and 20th century. The church's original brick built pulpit is still in a very good condition. The chalice in the church was made in 1680.

The village pub
Two general stores offering wide variety of fresh products, green grocery and stationery. One of the stores is owned by M-Market, joint stock company from the town of Lučenec.
Local fresh water dam known as "Otročok" spreads across 10 hectares. It is a popular place for local fisherman. During summer season children use this area to play and relax by the water.
