The village of Brzotín is situated in a natural basin known as Rožňavská kotlina and by the Slaná river. The earliest written reference of Brzotín dates from 1242. It was known as a small village established on the ruins of an old settlement which was involved in the gold mining over the previous centuries.

Originally, the village belonged to the family of Bebek and since 1523 it was owned by the family of Máriássy. The members of the latter family decided to build a castle in the village, which was destroyed during the Turkish invasion in 16th century (1573). The village's own coat of arms dates from 1575 and shows the picture of silver cross with several silver mining tools on the green background field.
The main source for earning a living for villagers was farming, mining and various crafts. The village's own mining furnace was built in 1847 however the mining industry was not very profitable and had completely vanished by the end of 19th century. The historical documents suggest that in 1828 there were 1,211 inhabitants living in just 164 houses. The village was joined to Hungary in 1938 for the following 7 years.
