The city called Holíč is situated in the north of Záhorská lowland, 88 km from the capital Bratislava. The first written mention about Holíč comes from the year 1205, when it was called Wywar – New castle.
Holíč has a very rich history, what supports also the existence of many historical relics, mostly of a sacral character – churches and chaples. Bourgeois houses are also interesting, but above all baroque castle, the former seat of the royal family the Habsburgs. Originally, it was a “water castle“ which was rebuilt to serve as a Renaissance fortress against the Turks. In the 18th century it was given a baroque shape by the new owner Štefan František Lotrinský. In the 1970 it was enunciated as a national cultural antiquity.
Nowadays is the castle serving for different cultural events. The most visited are the “Knight Games“ during which the history of the castle is reminded by topical dances, music or fencing, warriors with horses, zanies and by handicraftsmen. Visitors can join many games and competitions.
Tha castle´s chapel becomes a concert hall of many Slovak and foreign artists every thursday of July.
The inhabitants of Holíč are called “onion-men”, what has its origin in annual Onion Day taking place in the Holíč´s castle. The topic of all games and competitions is even onion.
