Kolárovo-

Kolárovo belongs to the largest cities of lower Žitný island. The city has approximately
11 000 inhabitants and lies on Podunajská lowland nearby the junction of the rivers Váh and Small Danube. It needs it was mentioned for the first time in 1268 and during its existence it has changed its name for many times (Stará Guta, Veľká Guta, Malá Guta, Gutta), the last time in August 1948. Kolárovo had been twice promoted to a city. In the deed of King Ladislav V. from 1551 was Gutta already mentioned as a city.
In the municipal parish Frog’s castle had stayed in the past there, according to several sources it was called Castle of peace, which was built by Queen Mary in 1349. Roman Catholic Church of Assumption of the Virgin was built in 1724-1725 in baroque style in the place of an old burned out gothic church. Kolárovo since its 700-year-old presence has experienced many natural disasters (confalgrations or floods). In 1965 was Kolárovo affected by the most destructive flood in the whole history. Before the flood Kolárovo had been an exlusive agricultural village and after that it changed to an industrial centre of the northeastern part of Žitný island.
On 14th October 1967 became the largest village of Czechoslovakia a city, Kolárovo was again given the status of a city.
In the nice natural area near the old river-basin of Small Danube in Kolárovo is situated a swimming water mill. It is the only one relic of its kind in whole Slovakia. In the object one can find a museum of water miller’s-trade. In the natural area they have made good contiditions for encampment, alimentation and organizing different social events and schoolings, as e.g. schooling for environmentalists. Swimming water mill is connected with the city by the longest roofed wooden bridge in Central Europe. On the “dead“ branch of the river Small Danube are good conditions for sculling and other surrounding waters are a paradise for the fishermen.
Turičné festivities are the only remained folk habits of all.
In the city you can pass a night atmany accommodation facilities and it is available to taste Kolárovo’s specialities.
