Altar of Holy Mary's Apparition

The village of Chyžné is situated in the eastern part of mountain range known as Revúcka vrchovina and only about 8 km southerly from the town of Revúca. This small village is located off the main road and the nearest village of Lubeník is only 1 km far.
Historical background of the village:

The earliest written reference of Chyžné dates to 1427 however there are some indications that this village has got even longer history as one of the village churches was built in 13th century.
This early gothic Roman Catholic Church has got beautiful indoors decorations, wooden bell house and is famous for the its altar of Holy Mary's Apparition made by Master Pavol of Levoča. This church is on the list of National Cultural Heritage of Slovakia and is one of the properties which are the part of so called "Gothic Path".
The second church in the village - the Evangelic Church - was built in 1886. Evangelical priest, writer and poet Mr. S. Tomášik has lived in Chyžné since the age of six and to commemorate his life work, there is memorial room, wall plate and tomb - stone.

In 1556 the village was destroyed after the Turkish invasion.
Between 16th and 18th century the villagers were involved in mining, iron industry, farming and agricultural activities.
The village has got 417 inhabitants who are occupied working in the local magnesite plate, farmer's co - operative and forest association.
There are two general stores, one pub and private car repair center and Evangelical Parish Council.

The total cadastral area of the village is 1952 hectares, the grounds vary from 280 m to 1409 m and there is moderately sized hunting ground.

The village is a good starting point for short and long distance walking and several footpaths are open for public to enjoy outdoor activities, fresh air and beautiful nature.
Numerous sorts of mushrooms grow in the area and those who like mushroom picking are welcome to come to this region.
