Castle in Hlohovec

Hlohovec is situated in the west part of Slovakia, the river Váh flows trough the town, from the north it is bordered by the mountain Považský Inovec, from the south by Nitrianska upland. The elevation above sea level is 156 metres metres above sea level. The cadastral area is approximately 6413 ha large, including the local part Šulekovo. This village situated on the right bank of the river Váh was linked to Hlohovec in 1980.
The first written mention about Hlohovec comes from 1113 – the settlement Golguz is mentioned in Zoborská writing. The settlemend obtained the municipal privileges in 1362. During the feudalism was Hlohovec the trade centre. Developed handicrafts and bounsy trade fairs were the characteristic symbols of Hlohovec.
Renaissance and baroque castle with a large park in English style with French terraces and georgous plane-trees is regarded as the most significant historical building.

Empire theatre from 1802 with scarce interrior paintings and sculpture decoration is a unique theatre building from the Empire period in the Central Europe serves its purposes also nowadays.
Originally gothic Church of St. Michael Archangel and Chapel of St. Ann from 1748 are dominants of the Hlohovec’s centre. To the rare buildings belong also the former residence of the municipal hospital with Church of Holy Ghost from the 14th century.
In the komplex of Františkánsky monastery one of the parts serves as a museum and the another one serves its purposes. Its most scarce area is the refectory from 1648, nowadays serves as a municipal ceremony hall.
Hlohovec provides many opportunities of active relax in its surrounding, with hiking opportuinities in Považský Inovec. There is the attractive river Váh for the watermen, fishermen use the rich fishing areas in its neighbourhood. The town has built also the view point ŠIANEC, which is situated above the town and provides a georgeous view of Hlohovec and its large surrounding.

The mansion park has a beautiful natural pond and is the right place for pleasing walking. Other attractive facilities are the summer bathing establishment with minigolf or interesting programmes prepared by the observatory with its planetarium. History lovers will surely appriciate expositions in the museum of homeland study.
