The town Rajec is situated 21 km from the district town Žilina, in the middle of Rajecká valley. From the East it is bordered by the mountains Malá Fatra, from the West by Strážovské hills, situated in the height 455 metres above sea level.
Rajec is the oldest settlement of Rajecká valley. The first written mentions about Rajec come from 1193 from the deed of king Bello III., but it was firstly mentioned as a town even in 1397.
The economic growth of the town was significantly supported by developed handicrafts associated in guilds from the 17th to 19th century. The oldest ones were the guilds of tailors, shoemakers, butchers, tanners or cobblers. In the 18th century Rajec became famous around Europe because of „rajčovina“ production, from what leather boots called „kordovánky“ had been sewed.

In past was the town famous also because of organs production, which came from the workroom of family Pažítková. Three generations of these masters have presented in Rajec in the years 1757 – 1879.
During many centuries was the town formed by development of culture, economics and spirituality of inhabitants – we mean the three religious persuasions – catholic, evangelic and jewish.
Ján Frivaldský – zoolog and and naturalist, and Juraj Slota, who connected the generations of Kollár’s and Štúr’s adherents by his literary activity, are both very meanful native sons of Rajec. Juraj Slota was also a co-founder of “Matica slovenská”. From the other natives we can mention also sculptor Rudolf Pribiš and painter Vladimír Kompánek.
The municipal centre is created by historical tetragonal square from 15th century and in its middle one can see a town hall built in 16th century. In the south part of the square stands two-storeyed Rennaisance building from the 17th century, where the Municipal museum has its seat. At the square one can admire the “Thriad column“ from 1818. 1368. Next to the church stands the Old rectory from the year 1657.
Rajec and its surroundings are very attractive thanks to the sutiable conditions for active relax – whether you would like to enjoy the thermal bath Veronika, fishing in the pond Košiare, cyclotourism, tourism, hores riding, skiing, visiting fitnesscentre or in near future also playing golf in recreation area Charubina, which is under the course of construction, and will be the first golf course in North Považie.
