In the place where the rivers Váh and Revúca meet, in embracement of the Slovak mounatins Veľká Fatra, Chočské hills and Nízke Tatry in the middle of beautiful nature of Liptovská fold, lies in the elevation 496 metres above sea level the city Ružomberok. It is famous thanks to its history and also because of that it has in its name and also coat-of-arms a rose.
The first written mention about a settlement comes from 1233. Municipal privileges got the city in 1318 and in 1340 they were confirmed in writing and spread by Karol Róbert. Determination of borders of the municipal parish was also a part of the privileges. In the parish many colonies, streets of the cities Biely Potok, Černová, Vlkolínec and Villa Ludrová were founded. Ružomberok has developed natural business and handicraft centre thans to the significant croosroads linking the north with the south and the east with the west.
Nowadays Ružomberok – the heart fo Liptov – has been still developing, reconstructing, becoming more beautiful and a centre of travel movement. Its central part was enunciated an ancient monument. To NKP belongs a group of historical buildings connected with the personality of Andrej Hlinka. The goup includes Roman Catholic Church of St. Ondrej in the Andrej Hlinka’s Square (1585), which stands in the place of smaller sacral building from the 14th century - it is Memorial of Andrej Hlinka (in 1939-1945 it served as a tomb of Msgr. A. Hlinka), town hall – new Rennaisance building of municipal office (1897).
One of the other historical object belong also Piaristic monastery (1735), monastical church “Elevation of St. Crucifix“ (1806) and Piaristic gymnázium (1888) – today’s seat of Catholic University. The culture house – the largest cultural stand offering accommodation and restaurant services – has been connected to the name Andrej Hlinka. During Ružomberok’s sight seeing one cannot pass Liptov’s Museum and Gallery of Ľudovít Fulla – well known artist and art connoisseur. The most known relic of Ružomberok is the natural reservation of folk architecture Vlkolínec (1977) .
In terms of natural science part it is necessary to mention the high potential of natural marits, natural parks, natural reservations in nearby parts od Veľká Fatra and Nízke Tatry. Natural surrounding of the city offers a diversified palette of turistic and cycloturistic paths. The largest centre of winter sports is Skipark Ružomberok. The centre lies in the hill-side of Veľká Fatra upon Ružomberok in the elevation 930-1209 metres above sea level, approximately 2 kilometres far from the city centre. Great ski area includes 3 localities, which are connected by down runs and upland “traffic“ establishments. The cabine lift links Hrabovo with the main part of the ski area Malinô Brdo. The ski centre has 7 tows and 4-place chair lift. The longest down run is 3600 metres long.
In the summer season is Skipark concetrated to agrotourism and in the future it plans its interconnection with Vlkolínec.

Zaujímavé turistické strediská v okolí mesta
Medzi ďalšie najznámejšie turistické strediská patrí Smrekovica, Donovaly. Pre turistov je zaujímavé aj okolie Likavského hradu, vrch Havránok, na ktorom sa nachádza neskoré keltské osídlenie, a nedá sa nespomenúť neďaleká vodná nádrž Liptovská Mara, ktorá len zvyšuje atraktívnosť okolia. Nielen v meste, ale aj v blízkom okolí sa nachádza veľa rekreačných a kúpeľných stredísk. Medzi najznámejšie patrí termálne kúpalisko Bešeňová s celoročnou prevádzkou, ďalej sú to kúpele Lúčky na liečenie ženských chorôb a kúpele Ľubochňa so svojim liečebným endokrinologickým ústavom, aj keď má skôr charakter medicínsky ako kúpeľný.
Vlkolínec stále živá dedina
Táto rázovitá obec bola 11.12. 1993 v Kolumbijskej Cartagene zapísaná do Zoznamu svetového kultúrneho a prírodného dedičstva UNESCO, čo potvrdzuje jej výnimočnú a univerzálnu hodnotu a potrebu jej ochrany v prospech celého ľudstva.
Nachádza sa tu zrubová dvojpodlažná zvonica (1770), zrubová rumpáľová studňa(1860) a barokovo – klasicistický kostol Navštívenia Panny Márie( 1875) V obci sa nachádza aj Roľnícky dom – muzeálny objekt s expozíciou pôvodného bývania.
Počas celého roka sa vo Vlkolínci uskutočňujú rôzne kultúrne podujatia, z ktorých najväčším je Nedeľa vo Vlkolínci organizovaná vždy prvú augustovú nedeľu.
