Strekov-Strekov
Strekov
Large village Strekov in lowland Podunajská is situated at the west foot of highland Pohronská between the towns Štúrovo and Nové Zámky. The village is mentioned for the first time in founding bill of abbey Curt in Hronský Beňadik. Today the word Strekov means not only village but it also refers to the special and warmest vineyard region of Slovakia as well as seat of the cultivation station from which several famous strains of vine originate. Thanks to the favourable soil and climate conditions for vineyards situated in South-West, people can grow grape and produce great wine such as Rizling vlašský, Chardonnay, Alibert or in Strekov cultivated wine Devín and some others. Tradition of vine-growing dates back to the 15th century. Very interesting fact is that even the railway station in Strekov had its own vineyard. In the centre of the town there is vinoteka (wine shop) with the tasting room. People from Strekovo can offer you great wine as well as tasty delicacies typical for this southern region such as strudels or oilcakes made from greaves.
Visitors and tourists are attracted by important historical sacral monument, too. This monument is Roman-Catholic Church of All Saints from 1397 which was build at the place where original wood chapel was situated. The substantial restoration in Baroque architectural style gave it a new shape. Very remarkable is the main picture of All Saints in the church interior as well as the statue of influential priest and writer István Majer in front of the church. Twice the year pilgrims visit pilgrimage spot of Strekov called Cigléd with the chapel and spring of healing water.
Not only the beautiful village with its historical monuments and vineyard tradition offers pleasant and interesting experiences. For lovers of nature, fauna and flora is very attractive the surroundings of Strekov, e.g. Parížske swamps (184,05 ha) with cane, sedge and bulrush with the greatest number of swamp birds in Central Europe. It is also the place where regularly nests Reed Warbler which is very rare in Slovakia, as well as Little Crake or Bee-Bird which before leaving to Asia feeds itself up in the beehives in Strekov. This area was in 1994 declared National nature reserve and it’s the subject of scientific research of biologists, especially ornithologists.
