The village of Čučma is situated under the tallest peak (Skalisko) of the mountain range known as Volovské vrchy.
This old mining village is located about 5 km from the town of Rožňava.
The total cadastral area of the village is 1164 hectares and currently there are 567 inhabitants living in the village.
There are several facilities offering accommodation for visitors. One of the most popular is the local guest house which accommodate up to 8 people and tourist cottage which sleeps 15 people.
Several walking footpaths around the village offer breathtaking views and they are suitable for summer and winter season. Walking to Skalisko, the highest peak of surrounding mountain range, is very popular walking destination among people from this region. Skalisko (1293 meters above the sea level) is formerly known as Baracká skala, Baračka or Volovec however since 1976 the name of Skalisko was given to it.
One of the most interesting events in the village of Čučma is the Annual New Year's Walk to Volovec which takes place on the first Saturday in January each year.
The baroque - style sealing stamp of the village with the Latin words of "SIGILUM CSUCSOMIENSE" dates from 1735. It shows couple of crossed hammers, three flowers on the hill and four stars on the background. The same theme is used on the coat of arms which is one of the symbols of this village.
The earliest written reference of Čučma and its founder - member Michal, the son of Milecka of Nadabulky who pulled the community together, dates to 1339.
Čučma has always had a special relationship with the town of Rožňava and was awarded several privileges by this town. In 1413 Čučma became a part of Rožňava, the village was supposed to pay the town taxes and hand all the raw materials to the town's representatives.
The earliest tax list of the village dates to 1427.
Tensions between the village and the town of Rožňava started to grow by the end of 15th century and Čučma was trying to get its own independence over 16th century.
The village of Čučma was originally known as Chuchon, Chuchun and Czywczion. These names date to 1548.
Originally, the villagers of German origin were occupied working in the mining industry. They could not freely mine and sell the raw ore materials, they have to have a special permission to do so. However, since 1523 the Legal Act No. 39 has allowed them to mine and sell the produce without any restrictions.
The village library offers about 3 500 different books.
Many cultural events took place in the cultural hall over the past decades (e.g. amateur theater performances, dancing festivals, discotheque for all ages, May Day celebrations, children entertainment, events for elderly people, presentations, slide shows, educational lecturers and workshops). The village is now looking into possibilities of total refurbishing of the hall and wants to provide better service for all visitors.
