Historical information about Gemerská Poloma:
The earliest written reference of Gemerská Poloma dates from 1282.
Originally, the village consisted of two separate settlements - Malá Poloma and Veľká Poloma (Small Poloma and Big Poloma) which were joint together in 1958 and the village became known as Gemerská Poloma.
The major source of living for villagers has traditionally been farming and woodwork, with many of inhabitants chosing to be shepherds in the early days.

There are two churches in the village, one of them dates from 1787 and has got the neo - gothic tower which was built in 1874. The second, Roman Catholic Church, was built in 1802.
There is also a Bell House in the village which dates from the late 18th century. The bell in the house is even older and dates from 15th century.
The famous natives who were born in the village include the Medical Doctor Peter Madáč (1729 - 1805) and poet, historian, philosopher and journalist Peter Kellner Hostinský (1823 - 1873).
The village's own coat of arms shows the picture of a destroyed forest.

The village is situated on the south - eastern part of the mountain complex known as Slovenské rudohorie and in the valley of the Slaná river.
The fascinating bed of soap stone has been found in this area. It is considered to be one of the biggest soap stone beds in Europe. A new mine is going to be opened here and will be the first turnkey mine in Central Europe in the past 25 years. The stone should be sold to several countries in Central and Eastern Europe and will be used in the chemical, pharmaceutical and paper industries.

Several footpaths in the local woods are attracting walkers of all ages during all 4 of the seasons.
For those who enjoy sporting activities, there is a football club, table tennis club, walking group and aerobic club.

Hunting is also very popular. Many species of wild animals found their homes in the surrounding forests (including wolves, brown bears and boars).
Local cultural traditions and various crafts including carving, lace making, costume making are still alive.
There are three folk singing and dancing assemblies in the village as well as religious evangelical and catholic choir.
